Dr Elena Barraquer
Speaker Biography
Dr Elena Barraquer specializes in clinical ophthalmology of the anterior segment of the eye. Elena Barraquer is internationally renowned in the field of cataract surgery and the evolution of its treatment. Since she graduated in 1977 in Medicine and Surgery at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Elena Barraquer has focused on the development of ophthalmology treatments, especially in the care and treatment of patients. Elena Barraquer completed her ophthalmology training in the USA and Italy.
In 1977 Elena joined the research team at the National Eye Institute in Maryland and at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore in the laboratory of Professor W. Richard Green.
She earned her medical degree and majored in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (Harvard Medical School), making her one of the few Spanish specialists in ophthalmology who performed her entire specialty in the USA.
Later she moved to Turin, Italy, where from 1989 to 2002 she practiced as an ophthalmologist and surgeon at the Bosio Barraquer Associated Medical Studio.
In 2003, she returned to Barcelona to continue her career at the Barraquer Institute as Medical Director . In 2017, she founded the Elena Barraquer Foundation a non-profit organization that fights avoidable blindness, by organizing medical outreach camps to anywhere in the world to perform sight-restoring cataract surgery.
